So wondered Brian D. Miller and Alex W. White, partners in the Fairfield County-based MillerWhite School of Design. The partners are accomplished, award-winning designers and have taught for years at prestigiuous design programs in New York City and New England.
Ad Club of Connecticut 54th Annual Awards Show
The Advertising Club of Connecticut recognized the best in Connecticut advertising on May 21st at their 54th Annual Award Show. More than 110 awards were given out across over 50 categories in print, web, broadcast and environmental. Colangelo in Darien won “Best of Show” with their marketing support material for Beardsley Zoo; mediaBOOM of Guilford took the “Gold Brush” for a self-promotion piece; and Adams & Knight in Avon was awarded the “Gold Pen” for a poster series created for the Girl Scouts of Connecticut. Top Gold Award winners were Adams & Knight with nine, Outhouse Communications with five and Colangelo with four.
Yale MFA Graphic Design Archives

Differentiating our clients in their respective marketplaces, gaining the attention of their audiences, and making sure there is a consistent visual and verbal message are fundamental components to the services a marketing and design firm provides. But, when it comes to doing the same for our own firms many of us fail miserably. Promoting ourselves is much more difficult. Why? There are a number of reasons. In general, often we are not comfortable talking about ourselves, nor do we have the objective perspective for which our clients pay us to create clear messages.

The Mascola Group specializes in building brands that unlock and tap into the disposable income of the mass affluent markets. They have started up their own blog, called A Ride Uptown, where they post their findings and insights from research on the affluent target market.

Nick Healy is just one of those guys.
Out of school less than six years, Healy has already accomplished a lot: He is a successful art director at Mascola Group, an award-winning advertising agency in New Haven. He is Vice President of the CADC for the 2007-2008 season. And he has just launched an online limited-edition art gallery and clothing company called One of Twenty.
We talked to Nick about how he got to where he is, and where he wants to go from here.
